How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is both a science and an art, one that has been around for over 3,000  years. It is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, that predates written history. It is believed there are invisible channels that run throughout the body.  These channels (think of a straw) act like a highway and allow for the free movement of energy to flow.  Along these channels there exist hundreds of acupuncture points.  The acupuncturist diagnoses and identifies the channel that's blocked and comes up with a treatment protocol and determines which acupuncture points would be best for the treatment.

Acu What are the benefits of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of very thin needles (as thin as a human hair) into specific points on the body. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in alleviating various types of pain, such as lower back pain, knee pain, and migraines. In addition to pain relief, acupuncture has been proven to have other benefits such as improved mental health, enhanced sleep quality, relief from allergies, and more. We only use sterile, single use needles. Side effects may include soreness, fatigue, and occasionally headaches.

How Many Treatments are Needed?

This is hard to answer since the treatment needs of patients vary. In general, complex and long-standing chronic conditions require one or two treatments per week for several months. If you have acute problems or other special needs, an individualized treatment plan will be developed for you by the practitioner at Aim High Health during your first visit!

Acupuncture Services:

Acupuncture - 30 min

Cupping Therapy - 15 min

“Fire cupping therapy” is a traditional Chinese Medicine healing method. It involves heating up special cups with a fire source. The cups are applied to the skin in order to  create a vacuum which draws out toxins, improves blood flow and promotes healing.

Vacuum cupping therapy is very similar to fire cupping therapy the difference being instead of using a heat source, a pump is used to create a vacuum.

It helps with: Pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, deep-tissue.

  • Encourage whole-body comfort and relaxation.
  • Pain reduction
  • Reduce inflammation.
  • Enhance blood circulation.
  • Remove toxins from your body.

**Please inform the practitioner if you are on blood thinners, pregnant, or have diabetes, psoriasis, eczema or other skin conditions.

Dry Needling - 15-30 mins

Dry needling is a type of "Acupuncture" where applied to an affected muscle "knot" or "trigger point", it can decrease muscle tightness, increase blood flow and reduce pain. Patients often report immediate relief after treatment. The needles remain in your muscle for a short period of time.

Targeted Muscle Release Therapy (aka Gua Sha) - 15 min

"Muscle Release Therapy" (aka Gua Sha) is a traditional Chinese Medicine healing method which involves using a smooth rounded edged tool to scrape the muscle tissue. This can help reduce muscle knots and release muscle tension and help accelerate the healing process by increasing blood flow to the injured area and to increase range of motion.

  • Improve circulation
  • Reduces Muscle tightness
  • Musculoskeletal problems
  • Relief from tightness in the shoulders, legs & back
  • Soothe discomfort, stiffness, and tension

Moxibustion Therapy - 15 min

Moxibustion therapy is a traditional Chinese Medicine healing method which consists of burning specially prepared and dried mugwort leaves on to or in close proximity to select acupuncture points. This invigorates the blood and infuses heat into the body along the channels being treated. It is useful for stimulating the flow of “Qi “(pronounced "chee"), putting heat into the meridians,  improving blood flow and maintaining general well being.

**Please inform the practitioner if you are on blood thinners, pregnant, or have diabetes, psoriasis, eczema or other skin conditions.

Electro Acupuncture - 30 min

Electroacupuncture is a modified form of acupuncture that uses a mild electric current passed between needles, which generally applies more stimulation to acupoints. Please inform the acupuncturist if you have a pacemaker.
